Remarks
The Type J Seeker is a modified version of the classic 100 ton scout, converted for use as a mining and prospecting ship. The Seeker is usually built from a Type 1a Diamond Wedge Hull usually found as surplus/older Imperial craft. Staterooms, fuel tankage, and common area are removed to provide a combined cargo space of (up to) 20 tons. The air raft slot is replaced with a prospecting buggy or shuttle, and the dual turret assembly is usually refitted with a laser mining cutter for work in asteroid fields. Dismountable fuel tanks can be used in the ore bays to increase the fuel tankage back to 40 tons, but without these the ship is limited to Jump-1.
Service Use and Variations
The Seeker is often
employed by small fledgling and subsector mining corps, as well as freelance
miners and prospecting outfits. In addition, the craft is often the
favorite of those in the "small package trade" (smugglers). Variants
of the Seeker are many, but typical mods are the addition of exterior sling
points for cargo loading, enhanced exterior lighting for ground work, and
electrified outer hull systems to ward off animals on some worlds.
Most Seeker craft are built from older (but somtimes higher tech) hulls
and superstructure from before the war. Many builders and operators
take shortcuts during refitting and thus the craft are known for being
unreliable, or at least tempremental.
