Remarks
The Azhanti High Lightning was originally conceived and built to be a Fleet Intruder class ship back during the Solomani Rim war of the old Imperium. Although it was not technically a capital class ship in the days of the Imperium, the Azhanti ships of the Republic are the largest class of warship still in regular operation, and have been promoted to role of Heavy Cruiser within the High Guard, who operates six of these formidable vessels within the combined fleet.
Azhanti class ships carry a wide array
of weapons and defense systems, including a spinal mounted weapon (usually
particle accelerator), twenty-four 50-ton weapons bays, meson screens,
nuclear dampers, and a compliment of fighter craft of up to 60 fighter
craft organized into 10 ship squadrons. Small weapons systems such
as laser turrets, repulsors, and sandcasters cover the external surface
of it's heavy pierced plate hull structure.
Service Use and Variations
All 6 Azhanti High Lightning class ships are operated by the High Guard branch of the Star Service, and they are rotated through service within the Republic, usually being sent to hotspots of potential trouble as a measure of gunship diplomacy. For some reason not immediately known by the public, a large number Azhanti High Lightning ships escaped being taken over by the Eristicon during the war. Operational Azhanti class vessels are known to be in service by some of the pocket empires coreward of the Republic as well.
Variations to the Azhanti were made for the Scout Service, and for use as Frontier Cruisers or Auxilliary craft. These variants featured different weapons systems, such as meson spinal mounts and bays, and conversion of quarters and the auxilliary bridge for cargo space (in some Scout vessels). The exact configuration of weapons and other ship variations currently in use by the High Guard is considered classified information.
