Most of the native population within the Byler Republic is humanoid in nature, being typically of mixed Solomani and Vilani stock. Both the Vilani and Solomani are recognized as having common genetic ancestry, but subtle differences arise between the two races due to separation to their respective homeworlds some time far in the past. Several other important races of non-humanoid origin are catalogued here for reference. This list omits many, many single-planet races and subraces, too numerous to mention here. Races within this listing occupy multiple worlds, and are worthy of note either due to their prevalence, or representative power.
Solomani
With origins on Terek, this race is most
prevalent within the Republic, and also within the Solomani Confederation.
The Confederation once controlled Terek, but lost the planet to the Imperium
during the Solomani Rim war of the Third Imperium. The remains of
the Confederation lies rimward of the Byler Republic, and is generally
disorganized, and not considered a major political or military player since
the war. The Solomani of the Confederation are biologically identical
to their counterparts within the Republic, and elsewhere in the Wilds (e.g.,
unincorporated planets of the former Empire). The Solomani still
subscribing to Confederate doctrine however believe in the racial superiority
of the human race over others, and usually follow strict if not Draconian
policing practices within their populations. Solomani / BR
diplomatic relations are tenuous, and occasionally military skirmishes
will occur along the Rimward Subsectors of the Solomani Rim Sector.
Vilani
The long-time conquered race that once controlled the first Imperium still has wide representation in terms of population within the Byler Republic. Within sectors coreward of the Republic, such as Vland Sector, Core, and the like, Vilani stock is most prevalent. Vilani are physically almost identical to Solomani humans, with slight differences in internal organ size, blood RH factors, and other subtle variations that are usually only detectable via medical or genetic examination. In the past Vilani have banded together to form states advocating the overthrow of the Imperium and return of imperial control to the Vilani, but these attempts were always quickly put down by the Imperium. In the past, Vilani worlds were also known for their high technology achievements, with many worlds operating at TL14 or 15. The current state of Vland and the sectors coreward of the Republic is not commonly known, although rumors abound.
Aslan
The Aslan have a feline appearance, but are genetically distant to all known cat families and are generally thought to have evolved independently. The Aslan are known for their territorial and sometimes warlike dispositions; they are a prideful race that often puts stature and pride above diplomacy and cooperation. The Aslan work well together in geneticly related groups (Clans), but often devote much time and energy into civil wars and infighting between clans. The Aslan control a vast amount of space starting rimward of Reavers Deep, and Spinward of the Magyar, comprising many sectors of space. In general the Aslan posess a slightly lower tech level capacity when it comes to space travel, and are generally thought to have developed or aquired Jump capability late in the game. On the positive side, Aslan are known for their sense of honor, ability to keep their word, and loyalty to their causes.
Aslan within the Republic can be found but are not common. Most Aslan within the borders of the Republic are descendants of small clans originally founded within the Imperium. The state of the Aslan Hierate, or ruling body controlling the majority of Aslan space, is not generally up to date, but last reports indicate the Hierate is focusing on internal matters dealing with the aftermath of the collapse of the Imperium. The effects of the Eristicon on the Aslan are not well known but it is believed to have been less severe.
Vargr
The Vargr are a race of bipedal wolf-like people that, unlike the Aslan, can be linked genetically to the animal kingdom, leading many (non-Vargr) to speculate that the race was an artificial merging of canine and human genes of the distant past. The Vargr are gregarious, often viewed as untrustworthy (which is what the Vargr say of humans as well), and usually prefer to travel in large groups when within the Rebublic. Vargr are also known for their curiosity, and for their tendency to follow strong, charismatic leaders and to adhere to a rigid, caste-like system of social hierarchy.
Vargr are not usually known to associate with Humans on a long-term or social level, but have established business and military relations on a select case basis with organizations or citizens of the Republic. Vargr controlled space lies coreward of the Spinward Marches (Gvurrdon and neighboring sectors). The current disposition of the Vargr Enclaves is not common knowledge.
K'Kree
The K'Kree are centaur-like beings inhabiting space Trailing and Coreward from the Republic. The 2000 K'Kree worlds were one of the most distant and least frequently visited empires even in the heyday of the Imperium, and contact with the K'Kree is almost unheard of in the present day. The K'Kree are known for their interdependence, and harmonious coexistance within their own race. This peacefulness for their own kind is counterbalanced however by their xenophobic reactions to non K'Kree. The K'Kree are very distrustful of outsiders, and are disgusted by many common humanoid practices, including meat eating, livestock farming, and raising of domesticated animals. The K'Kree are almost never seen in the present day Republic; the status of their empire and the effects of the Eristicon are unclear, although it is widely held that the Brauletter visited the K'kree Sectors and Homeworld (Kirur) during the Brauletter Liberation. The K'Kree "Two Thousand Worlds" are located trailing from the old Imperium border Sectors (Stars End, Gateway).
Droyne
The Droyne are a race of small, flightless winged bipedal creatures that exist on a number of worlds scattered throughout Republic and former Imperium space. Archeological investigations conducted on a variety of worlds have supported the theory that the Droyne were once a major race, in control of a vast interstellar empire predating the Imperium. The Droyne of today, paradoxically, do not appear to posess the means or desire to achieve interstellar space flight, much less an empire. Droyne are widely considered to be of only average intelligence, and are perceived as being a generally unambitious race.
Droyne practice strange rituals involving the casting of coyns, small hieroglyphic symbols that are used to determine the caste, and ultimate job in society, a Droyne will take. Coyns are also consulted periodically during a Droyne's life to answer important life questions. Droyne within the Byler Republic are somewhat common, although their number varies greatly depending on the specific world.
Hiver
The Hiver are a mysterious race of alien beings that inhabit sectors spinward and rimward of the Republic. The Hiver are known for their curiousity and their enigmatic ways. The race is rarely seen within the borders of the Republic, and was considered isolationist even in the days of the Imperium. The relationship between the Brauletter and Hiver is a subject of theory and speculation. It is widely believed that the Hiver are somehow a parent or custodial race of the Brauletter.
Vegan
The Vegans are a reace of single-eyed bipedal
anthropods that have long, triple, intertwined tentacles for arms.
These tentacles are not very muscular, giving the Vegans a somewhat reduced
dexterity/grip. Vegans are considered by most to be an unambitious
race, preferring to have others take the initiative in most matters, including
their own governing. In the days of the Imperium, the central region
of the Solomani Rim sector was the Vegan Autonomous District, containing
the Vegan controlled worlds. During the years following the war,
a minor but agressive race within the worlds known as the Minjini
took control of the Vegan worlds, enslaving the inhabitants on many worlds.
The Vegans continue to resist the Minjini occupation but are in many cases
resigned to their fate and live as slaves.
Minjini
A race of tall, golden skinned humanoids with
a typically thin and tall build. Minjini are agressive expansionists
by nature, and tend to be opportunistic in taking control of worlds when
no one is looking. The Minjini currently occupy most of the Vegan
Autonomous District coreward of the Republic, and would be a major threat
to the Republic had they not lost most of their fleet during the disasterous
Bastil Raids. Minjini at their best are intelligent, well organized,
and pay attention to detail. Minjini art is well renowned through
the Republic for it's ornate patterns and fine workmanship. At their
worst, the Minjini are tempremental, agressive bullies that fail to respect
or cooperate with outsiders.
Drakaran
A Lizard-like race known for their cool, unemotional
approach to problems. More TBS.
Brauletter
A race of shape-shifting beings virtually
unknown to the Imperium until the Eristicon War, where they (now infamously)
intervened to stop the spread of the Eristicon at the empire's darkest
hour. Brauletter advisors are now seen more commonly within the Republic,
aiding in the A of future attacks.
Zhodani
The
Zhodani are the third known genetically human-derived race (after the Vilani
and Solomani). They inhabit a region Trailing the Spinward Marches,
and in the days before the Eristicon, they often were involved in wars
with the Imperium over frontier territiory in that sector. Zhodani
are most known and feared because of their psionic power. Zhodani
are not typically seen in the Republic, so not much is known about their
society today, or the current state of the Spinward Marches, although rumors
speculate that control of this region has reverted to the Zhodani.
