Remarks
The LSP Bangor is a typical example of the tried-and-true System Defense Boat, or SDB. The SDB has a long tradition in the Republic, and Imperium that preceeded it, as the workhorse of the planetary defense network. SDB squadrons are versatile strike units that can be stationed in an orbital base, asteroid cluster, or planetside. Full Streamlining allows the SDB to handle Atmospheric Intercept work, albeit with less efficiency than the advanced fighter. Unlike the Fighter classes, however, the SDB pack considerably more punch with three turret mountable hardpoints, usually equipped with laser weapontry or missile pods. The SDB crew of four usually consists of Pilot, Pilot's Mate/Navigator, Gunner, and Engineer. Since the SDB is not jump capable, it must be tendered for interstellar travel, but the high-G manuever drive and reserve fuel storage in the lateral pods allow the SDB considerable range in-system. SDBs typically do not have fuel refining on board due to space concerns, so they usually must be fueled with refined fuel on base or via a tender. Variants may allow unrefined fuel, see below.
Service Use and Variations
Bangor Class SDBs are in wide use throughout the Republic, and past LSP versions of the craft from the Imperium may also still be in service, particularly in outlying areas. The Solomani as well as Minjini both run fleets of SDBs with very similar architecture to the Bangor Class.
Several variant versions of the Bangor were officially produced, and an unknown number of custom variants created by individual planetary governments also exist. The most common variation of the craft is the shuttle conversion, where the central hardpoint and fuel tank are demounted to create 20 tons of cargo space or passenger seating. To accomplish this, the power plant for the craft is also downsized, yielding a manuever 3 capability and reduced power for the weapons. Fuel scoops and refining equipment are sometimes substituted for the central hardpoint, allowing the craft to refuel at gas giants but with a reduced efficiency vs. normal refining, causing unusually long refuel times of 24-36 hours.
