Veora-Terek War

Veora was colonized by Terek in 2750, and later proclaimed independence in 2883.  Over the next hundred or so years, Veora became a high-tech center, becoming a leading exporter of military and computer equipment to many worlds, including those in the Solomani Rim.  This policy quickly became a political issue for the Imperium, since worlds within the Imperium are restricted from exporting to the Solomani.  In March of 3117, Gylenor Rovas, Duke of Sol, commanded the 44th Fleetfrom Terek  to invade Veora and blockade export shipments.  The fleet was met by Veoran System defense forces and soundly defeated; the remaining ships falling back to Terek.  The fiasco led to the rise of anti-war sentiment on Terek, which along with other factors led to Rovas being deposed.

Despite open defiance of Imperial order by Veora, Archduke Hivvian refused to inderdict, presumably due to concerns of causing further instability in the Sol subsector.  Terek was left without a fleet, and little support for spending to develop or purchase new capital ships.  Meanwhile, on Veora, hostility against Terek grew as everything from the souring economy to a rash of unexplained illnesses was blamed on Terek or it's spies.  Veoran and Terekian rhetoric grew increasingly more agressive with each incident and exchange of accusations, and by 3119 the two worlds were deep into a spiraling cold war.

During these years, the Terekian military accelerated construction of a planetary defense screen that would shield Haramu and other key cities for orbital bombardment.   This program was controversial and derided as being an ineffective waste of money, but it's defensive rather than offensive nature, combined with the growing (perceived) Veoran threat allowed spending on the program to continue.

Veora too developed defense screens, and tried to match Terek's accomplishments.  Veoran progress was severely impeded by losses of key military import shipments, as these came under fire by covert forces presumably from Terek.  Veora followed suit, severely damaging Terek's shipping/trade in a similar series of attacks, but by 3023 Veoran ability to sustain these attacks waned, as economic conditions there worsened.  In 3024 an earthquake destroyed a major Veoran city, forcing the focus back towards domestic concerns.

Even though both worlds developed an extensive defense network, no invasion forces ever engaged on either side.  In 3025 however, the Eristicon came.  When it arrived on Terek, it was in control of a Vampire Fleet consisting of several Naval vessels, and they attempted to bombard Terek.  The defense screens worked to a large degree, saving Haramu and several other cities from the brunt of the attack, although other cities sustained severe damage.  Unable to establish an effective landing corridor on Terek, the Eristicon forces moved onward, (to later be disabled by the Brauletter Fleet)

On Veora, a similar sequence of events took place; Eristicon ships invading but failing to establish orbital supremacy due to the defense systems.  One Eristicon ship in the system carried thousands of Autobot drones however and a significant fraction of them were able to penetrate Veoran defenses, infecting the surface infrastructure and eventually resulting in millions of lives lost.  Veora was later able to recover, with Brauletter help.

After the war, Veorans widely believed that Terek was responsible for the Eristicon, and it was perhaps a Terekian weapon that got out of control.  The fact that Terek fared better during the war than Veora did not serve to quell this sentiment.  When the Terekian Federation was formed in 3051, Veora was invited to participate and almost joined as a co-founding world, but the Veoran Prime Minister was assassinated days before the signing, and the treaty was never realized.   Veora was also invited to join the Byler Republic in 3097, but refused.

Relations improved slightly over the next 10 years, as Trade restrictions to Veora were eased and Free Traders began increased activity to Veora.  The Mercantile Guild, barred by charter from operating in Veora, later filed a claim against the FTA that later resulted in the resumption of trade restrictions to Veora.  Terek/Veoran relations cooled considerably from that point until present-day.  Currently, accusations of assisting the Solomani/Minjini alliance have been made against Veora, which have caused a further deterioration in the relationship.
