Centrist Referendum Passes; Kampe Resigns
In a stunning blow to the Federalist Party, the Centrist Referendum issued by the Pondii Centrist Party passed the Assembly by six votes, clearing the way for a major governmental reorganization of the Republic. The Referendum would allow for unequal representation among Republic Member worlds, with a special, to be named controlling political block consisting of founding member worlds of Terek, Pondii, and Burath. The referendum would also allow for return of noble titles to families in the Imperial line, and grant special political designates for those parties.
Assembly Head Brandon Kampe resigned shortly after the vote, stating that "he could not serve in a false democracy". The Assembly has appointed Matthew Worris, the Assembly representative for Midway, as temporary leader for an interim period of two weeks. An Assembly vote and confirmation process is expected to appoint a new head, but that may also be blocked by the Centrist party, who has threatened to veto any new appointment until new articles can be drawn up.
Riots erupted on the streets
of Terek as ex-patriots from various worlds not well repesented in the
new organization took to the streets, burning and looting government offices.
Several member worlds, including Bastil, and the newly annexed Shulgi have
threatened to succession. Republic officials have been urging calm
and are appealing to local jurstictions to enforce curfews to curb nightly
looting and rioting. RSF forces have been dispatched to key
areas of most major metropolitan areas, as well as military installations,
with hundreds of thousands of reservists called into duty for the task.
Centrists Appoint Rourke Umbrist as Assembly Head
The newly empowered Centrist party continued moves to solidify it's position within the Republic today by appointing Rourke Umbrist to Assembly Head, a position vacated by Brandon Kampe late last month. Umbrist, former DKI executive and, until recently, interim chief of that organization, has a modest political background on Terek, but little interstellar political experience. Centrist party officials tout Umbrist as having a very desireable mixture of political and business experience, and a history of objective decision making. Analysts following Republic politics were surprised by the move, but speculated that Umbrist may be part of a campaign to convince the general public that the Centrists are not showing favor to members of Noble descent.
Umbrist's appointment was passed with a near unanimous vote in the Assembly. Rumors that some members had been coerced into voting for the appointment could not be substantiated, and no formal complaints on the proceeding were filed. Umbrist's appointment takes effect immediately. A separate signing ceremony for the Centrist Referendum articles is scheduled for April 24th on Pondii.
Republic Forces take control of Merganser, Everin Starports
A Republic Navy push into Minjini space continues to gain ground, as Star Service forces assume control of the Merganser highport, and Everin downport. Forces at Everin also claim to have secured the slot-9 Gas Giant in that system. The Minjini command so far has shown little or no resistance to the Republic advance, a fact that both encourages and worries Republic military planners. Different theories have been advanced, including the possibility that the Minjini are trying to incite Republic forces into overextending themselves. Other analysts feel that estimates into the size and potency of Minjini Naval forces may have been overconservative, and that reported rumors of secret weapons and large-scale ship purchases from the Solomani may have been part of an elaborate Minjini Intelligence ploy.
Signing Attacks on Pondii Claim 58; COM Activity Suspected
An explosion at the Pondii Imperial Grounds during the signing ceremony for the Centrist Referendum Articles has claimed the life of at least 58 attending members, with many more injured. The incident occured shortly after delegates had left the podium, and no Republic representatives were killed in the blast, which destroyed most of the stage the group was standing on just fifteen minutes before. The explosion knocked debris and support structures into the milling crowd below, which is where most of the casualties occurred. Others were killed by flying debris from statuary and ornamental hangings that were launched across the expansive hall by the force of the blast.
Investigators
began combing the site rigorously almost immediately following the evacuation
of the site, looking for clues as to the cause of the explosion.
Unidentified sources on the investigation team said that early signs pointed
to Church of the Machine (COM), as a number of key security measures were
found to be defeated using technology known to be a favorite of that organization,
including AI agents.
Members of the Alliance of Commerce Steering Committee, led by representatives from DKI, Steland Systems, and MS/Interstar today issued a formal protest to the Republic Assembly regarding recent government seizures of company property and capital equipment deemed vital for the war effort. The transfer of property, which has included installations on such worlds as Barnard, Mukhaldim, and Ishimshulgi, has taken place under the Emergency War Contingency Act of the Byler Constitutition, which allows for multistellar assets to be comandeered or transferred to governmental authority during times of war. The provision calls for compensation to be paid to the private parties, an area that the multistellar corporations are in dispute with the Republic.
In a memo to the AOC from the DKI Office of Curtis Rowley (DKI company president), detailed charges of property seizures without advance notice are given, including several starships which had acted as part of the DKI fleet escort services. DKI claims that the transfer of the ships jeapordizes DKI shipping, and causes unreasonable and irrepairable harm to the company. The AOC plans to collect a list of similar complaints and file them before the Assembly next month.
An isolated but virulent outbreak of White Catanian Fever on the Republic Border world of Oudh has been contained, say health officials at the N'Tor Medical complex there, but the Republic plans to send teams of infectious disease control experts there to certify the claim. The disease outbreak started in February and claimed the lives of sixty in the northern city of N'Tor, requiring a military quarantine of that city. The Global Oversee of Great Mothers, the ruling party on Oudh, praised the responsiveness of the Drakaran Military to aid in the containment and control of the population, thereby preventing a much larger catastrophe. The cause of the outbreak is unknown but thought to be brought in by traders or pirate activity which avoids landing inspection, bypassing medical screening checks. Statistics collected by the Free Trade Association say that such unauthorized landings are commonplace on Oudh.
Researchers at the Ghourxa Xenological Institute on Ghourxa say they have discovered compelling evidence that the mysterious dissapearance of the Brauletters from Republic space is due to a genetically engineered virus, benign to humans but fatal to Brauletters in 90% of the population. Professor Rheus Zaembo of the GXI said that his group had found traces of the virus in Brauletter cell cultures, but could not discuss the origin of the cell material for security reasons. Zaembo said that the DNA material recovered from the samples was unlike any he had seen before, and behaved in ways which convinced he and his team that they must be engineered. Among the oddities of the virus seems to be the ability to destroy itself after a certain number of replications, making it difficult to study or culture. Zaembo also speculated that, while harmless to human derived life, that humans can be a carrier for the disease.
Authorities on Terek have expanded martial law rules to twenty more cities on Terek as rioting, murders, lootings, and bombing of government buildings and property threaten to spiral out of control. Yesterday thousands congregated in the narrow streets of Haramu despite government orders not to assemble in order to protest Centralist policies being driven by the Assembly. The crowd was dispersed with gravitic repulsors leaving six dead, but not before several police riot vehicles were set ablaze by rocket propelled thermite grenades from an unknown source in the crowd. Seven police officers were injured in the attack, two critically.
Elsewhere on Terek, Government
installations including Naval and RSF ground stations at Gareven and Cobad
have come under attack by small groups of unknown terrorists, killing an
undisclosed number of military personell and destroying communications
towers and equipment. The RSF has called in Star System Marine
contingents to guard many of the facilities, but there is little agreement
as to who may be responsible for the attacks. Radical Luddite factions,
Church of the Machine, and Federalist Extremists have all been under investigation
and in some cases have made competing claims for the attacks.
Republic Naval forces have
entered the systems of Hsuilizish and Muan Issler and appear to be poised
for attack on Minjine, the Minjini homeworld. Naval Officials
would not comment on fleet movements as is policy, but trade reports from
the Vegan Autonomous District confirm that large portions of the 101st
and 32nd Fleets in fueling operations at the distant slot-8 gas giant of
Muan Issler, and at captured fuel depot facilities in Slot 6 of Hsuilizish.
There has been no evidence that Republic forces are initiating any invasion
or blockade of those two systems, apparently bypassing the mainworlds in
order to use the systems as staging areas. A Navy Official who would
not be identified commented that "the close proximity of the staging area
to the mainworld suggests a large operation may be under way", adding that
"Scouting expeditions can reach Minjine from the safety of the forward
command at Merganser, but a full invasion force would be better served
launching from Jump-1 distance, so as to maintain a fuel reserve in the
event of a pullback."
The Solarist-run nation of
Koman on Uvaia voted today to suspend loan guarantees to Ark Academy, it's
neighbor to the north, over an apparent flap regarding immigrating Aslan.
Earlier this year, Ark Academy agreed to allow Aslan Ihatei settlers to
purchase land on the sparesely populated continent, promising Solaria that
it would work to put a cap on maximum immigration and land title transfers.
Details of the arrangement were never subsequently published, and the Solar
Church has demanded that the formal agreement be published before further
loans and aid packages are issued to Ark Academy. Since January,
some twenty thousand Aslan have made claims or settled on Uvaia, a figure
which has alarmed some in the Republic as well as the Uvaian nations.
Relief workers on Agidda
say that up to Fifteen Million may have died in the recent civil war, the
bloodiest so far in a long string of conflict between the hill-dwelling
Kevi in the north, and the Southern Ketaxi nomadic desert tribes to the
south. Recent sandstorms in the area have only exacerbated the problem
of declining arable farmland on the world, and Relief organizations warn
that another two hundred million may be in danger of starvation over the
coming dry season unless a massive relief effort is launched.
Republic officials defended the recent decision to move Agidda down to
amber zone status from red, saying that accusations that the Mercantile
Guild and megacorporation interests on the world were costing the lives
of millions. Declaration of red zone status for reasons of natural
disaster had previously qualified Agidda to direct access to emergency
aid from the Republic, but has interfered with shipping and corporate operations
there.
Patrols guarding the rimward
edge of the Republic border with the Solomani have reported a marked increase
in clashes with Solomani scouts, who appear to be probing the border worlds
of Remulak, Ys, and Inferno as part of a stepped-up intelligence gathering
campaign. The Republic has constantly been in dispute with
the Solomani Rim regarding these worlds, in addition to the independent
worlds Hephiastos, Calgary, and Forlorn, over trade and colonization rights.
Ys has been the site of several significant engagements with Solomani Forces,
the most recent of which occurred late last year as Solomani rebels seized
control of the starport and several cities. The Republic has responded
by increasing it's fleet strength at the Ys Naval base, but in recent months
Solomani activity has picked up as Republic ships are diverted to the Minjini
Front.
The Bertranite Church of Ghourxa, thought to be the spiritual center of the Bertranite movement, today announced the appointment of Khilian Devaer as the next Holy Gate, replacing Vikor Bahat as head cleric. The Bertranite movement has a long history of mysterious internal organizations, and the Church has had a long-standing policy of not discussing or disclosing the organization of the leadership to outsiders. Still, the absence of Bahat and many of his supporting inner circle for the past several months has led to widespread speculation that a shakeup within the organization was due.
Davaer is a well-known figure
within the church, but a surprising choice nonetheless, as he is the first
member of a Minjini Order to be appointed to the head of the church since
it's founding. Minjini Orders within the Bertranite Church
have more frequently taken on a secondary and supporting role, but the
appointment of Davaer suggests that the internal balance of power may be
shifting.
Naasirka Corporation today
announced that it intends to launch a massive effort to upgrade security
measures within the X-Mail system. The upgrades, which have been
given preliminary approval by the Republic Reconnaissance Office, are scheduled
to begin roll-out in November, and the company warns that X-Mail delivery
at select sites may be delayed by several days during software testing.
The measures are intended to address security concerns with unauthorized
access to the X-Mail network, and will employ cutting-edge techniques developed
by Naasirka.
Shilgiili Loses Two Ships to Band-of-Nine Attack
The System Defense Force of Shilgiili was ambushed today by several Band-of-Nine vessels while taking delivery of three Stromali Class Escort Destroyers from the Republic Navy. The Shilgiili force was caught off guard during the raid, losing several System Defense Boats to meson fire. Band-of-Nine forces boarded and took control of two of the three Destroyers, which were in the middle of fueling operations prior to transfer into service and had only skeleton crews. The third destroyer was then gutted by meson fire from the pirate fleet's 3000-ton Warhound Class ship, killing seven aboard. Band-of-Nine ships, including the two stolen destroyers, were then pursued to the 100 diameter limit in a running firefight, where the damaged but still operational pirate fleet then jumped out to points unknown.
The Republic Navy has denied accusations that they did not provide adequate security for the ship transfer, instead blaming the Shilgiili defense forces for failing to follow security protocols, and allowing the destroyers to remain ungunned during the transfer. The loss of the destroyers represents a huge setback for the Shilgiili system security, and security in the region in general, where piracy has been on the uprise. The ships had been intended to be the seed capital ships for the newly-incorporated Shilgiili system's planetary defense network.
Whereabouts of the Band-of-Nine
fleet is unknown, but RRO scout vessels have been dispatched to systems
in the area to try to determine their location. Earlier talks about
the creation of a piracy task force were scrapped due to demands from the
Minjini conflict and Solomani Concerns, but this event may cause Navy war
planners to reconsider.
The Alliance of Commerce has formally announced it's backing of the Federalist Petition, a document declaring the recent Republic moves towards a Centralist structure as illegal and invalid. The AOC, in their statement at a huge Federalist Rally held in Haramu, also alleged that the Centralists were engaged in a conspiracy with military leaders to create a Solomani-like police state, prompting some to draw the further conclusion that the movement is Solomani based. The Republic government has moved to curb attendance at the rallies, citing safety concerns, but clashes between Federalist supporters and police have led to a series of riots that have turned deadly, with several law enforcement agents killed, along with dozens of protesters, and many more wounded to date.
In addition to the recent statements, the AOC has issued a work order stoppage on many critical military contracts, claiming that the recent government upheavals have made it impossible to fufill existing contracts in a timely fashion. Centrist leader Rourke Umbrist declared the member organizations of the AOC to be in breach of contract and that the actions jeapordize safety of the Republic. He went on to say the Republic would levy serious fines, and take further action as necessary to resume contract shipments.
Navy forces stationed at Ys have issued a warning to the systems of Remulak, Ys, and Inferno regarding Solomani incursion into Republic space. A Statement from the office of the 9th Fleet's Admiral George Burton today said that the current Fleet disposition is stretched critically thin, and that the Navy could no longer assure regular patrols of refueling points for these systems. Unmarked military vessels thought to be allied with the Solomani movement have staged an increasing number of raids to these systems in recent months, although Naval command admits it is difficult to differentiate many of these attacks from independent acts of piracy. Burton said the 9th fleet task forces would move to protect the highports and mainworlds of the rimward side of the Republic, but added he could not guarantee the defense of these worlds at the current Fleet support levels. Several squadrons from the 9th Fleet are currently engaged in the Minjini interdiction campaign in the Vegan Autonomous District.
DKI Chief Curtis Rowley Killed in Grav Limo Bombing
Curtis Rowley was killed today along with four members of his immediate staff in an explosion that destroyed the grav car he was riding in as it left Dalton Kess Industries (DKI) headquarters in Haramu. Rowley, the recently appointed CEO the Multistellar corporation, only served in office nine months after replacing Nathan Trimble III, who was killed in the Trinity-3 attack by Minjini forces on Terek. Company officials declined to comment on source of attack, but did issue a general statement expressing sadness and regret at the loss, and a commitment to find those responsible. Private sources have speculated the bombing could have been the work of Luddite extremists, or perhaps radical Centrists unhappy with the companies recent alignment the Federalist Party via it's AOC membership and support.
DKI has not named a successor but said it would continue normal operation while the Board of Directors works to nominate a replacement.
RSF Cracks Major Slave Transport Ring
The RSF today reported they had cracked a major slave trade operation, involving the Kinasian Government of Averon, several mining bases on Mukhaldim and at least thirty starships and their captains. "Slave trade between the two worlds had long been rumored but no conclusive evidence to support it had been brought out", said Leroy Stryker, RSF Commander for Sol Sector Operations. Stryker went on to praise RSF investigators for doing a "crack job at finding and breaking the ring". So far, fourteen starships, including a 20,000-Ton Dragger Class Cargo Transport have been impounded, and their crews arrested. Sixteen more ships have been identified for questioning and are now on the RSF watch list. "We'll get them, they have no real place to go, no place to hide." said Stryker.
Akhamin's Kinasian Government
has also come under fire from Republic Officials as a result of the investigation,
with many Republic Representatives filing accusations that the Kinasians
have turned a blind eye to the slave problem, or have even participated
in the trade.
Band of Nine Seize Langelos Highport, Initiates Blockade Action
The fleet of outlaw ships known as Band of Nine has seized the highport of the independent world of Langelos, a major independent trade hub, after decisively defeating Langelos' system defense force. Langelos, once a member of the Gashiddan Union, has relied on a relatively small but capable force to defend it's trade interests, but that force proved no match to the Band of Nine fleet, which now reportedly includes a meson capable Stromali Destroyer. Control of the highport was handed over to John Stiles, the Band of Nine leader after threats by the group to destroy it along with the downport.
Band of Nine issued a statement calling for the Langelos Ruling Party to step down and turn control of the ground forces over to Band of Nine Control, but State Leader Ervbellu Seeveith responded on global network broadcasts that "Langelos would not surrender to common thuggery". A government statement urging help from it's interstellar neighbors was broadcast on guardbands throughout the Langelos system, but Republic Analysts said privately that there was little chance the Republic, or any of Langelos' direct neighbors were in a position to intervene.
The situation remains a standoff as Band-of-Nine has cut off all interstellar shipping to Langelos in response to the Seeveith's refusal to step down. Langelos relies heavily on foreign imports of food and other agricultural products from it's neighbors, raising worries about a possible humanitarian crisis.
Solomani Engage with Republic Forces at Remulak
Sketchy reports just in indicating that a large force of Solomani ships has entered the Remulak system and is engaged with the 234th Fleet. The 234th, under the command of Admiral Edrik Yembar, has successfully repulsed Solomani incursions in the recent past. The fleet is now stretched thin as it attempts to cover the Republic border in the absence of most of the 9th Fleet, which has moved in to cover for the gutted 108th fleet at Terek and Bastil.
Solomani Inflict Heavy Damage at Remulak, Ys
Solomani incursions into Republic space have intensified as major fleet actions continue on Remulak, inflicting heavy damage to the forces of the 234th defending there. Casualty reports are still inconclusive, but at least seven Republic Capital ships have been lost, forcing regrouping of the remaining fleet to the outer system.
On Ys, reports are in that
other elements of the Solomani Fleet have entered the system and are staging
for a second incursion there from the outer system. Defensive forces
there have braced for attack, grouping around the Ys mainworld, but these
forces are by all independent reports outgunned, and will be unlikely to
hold the highport against the mounting Solomani forces.
